Ghana football legend Mohammed Polo has attributed the countrys recent struggles in football to technical deficiencies rather than administrative failures, insisting that more attention must be given to coaching development and the preservation of Ghanas football identity.
The former Hearts of Oak star acknowledged the efforts of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in establishing structures aimed at improving the game but believes the lack of tangible results suggests that a key element is still missing.
According to Polo, the missing component is a stronger technical foundation that focuses on developing coaches and players.
My five-year development plan is in place because the GFA management is doing a lot and putting every structure in place, but no results to show. It shows that there is something missing. What is missing is technical, Polo told Asempa Sports.
The 1982 Africa Cup of Nations winner argued that Ghanas football identity has always been built around technical ability, creativity and a distinct style of play, which he believes must be deliberately passed on to younger generations.
Polo noted that while debates continue over whether local coaches are capable of handling top national assignments, the priority should be on providing them with the necessary knowledge and resources to develop players effectively.
The conversations surrounding local-based coaches, they are doing their best, you know; but we need to let Ghanaians know that our legends are not good. But the ball we play shows that we have a style of football. And we want to teach the children what we know, which I am sure that those who will come, it will help us, he added.
The former Black Stars winger believes involving experienced former players and local football experts in coaching development programmes will help restore Ghanas traditional approach to the game.
Polo is convinced that a renewed focus on technical education at the grassroots level will be key to producing players capable of competing at the highest level and returning Ghanaian football to its former standards.
